Annapurna Interactive is investing in Remedy Entertainment's Control 2, and will assist the Finnish developer in expanding its two franchises into transmedia properties.
Both companies have signed a "strategic partnership agreement" in which Annapurna will fund 50% of the sequel's development costs. In return, it now holds the rights to "extend" Control and Alan Wake into film, TV, and selected audiovisuals.
This follows Remedy CEO Tero Virtala's statement earlier this year that both franchises would be further developed, and Remedy gaining full franchise rights to Control in February.
Remedy and Annapurna reach a agreement
Under the terms of the agreement, Remedy will receive a larger share of revenue from Control 2's sales after initial investments are recovered. Additionally, upcoming "audiovisual productions" will generate more revenue for Annapurna.
"This strategic partnership between Annapurna and Remedy is a significant milestone and an exciting opportunity for us," Virtala wrote. "This allows us to develop Control 2 to the highest standard, enable self-publishing for selected titles, and expand our franchises to other mediums."
For Annapurna, this is the second game it has adapted into film or TV. Last year, it announced plans to bring BlueTwelve's sci-fi cat adventure Stray to the big screen, and hinted at potential adaptations of other titles.
As of early August, Control 2 was in the production-ready phase. However, Remedy is currently focused on its multiplayer spinoff "Condor," as well as contract work on remastering the first two Max Payne games for Rockstar.
Earlier this week, the original Control celebrated its fifth anniversary. Details on which medium either it or Alan Wake will venture into next have not been disclosed in the press release.
